BEYOND PERFORMANCE FESTIVAL - Toolkit for your Music Career
Music, Coaching, Psychology -- and Much More. By Laura Granero and Laura Ortiz
In today’s world, musicians face challenges that extend far beyond the purely artistic realm or the traditional training provided by conservatoires. The practical realities of a musical career demand not only technical and interpretative mastery but also a diverse set of professional skills. Musicians must cultivate effective and mindful practice methods, develop sustainable career strategies, and acquire essential knowledge in areas such as project management, fundraising, and professional networking. Moreover, safeguarding one’s physical and mental well-being is paramount in a profession that is both demanding and often unpredictable.
With the BEYOND PERFORMANCE Festival, we seek to create a space where musicians can engage with these crucial topics through expert-led lectures, interactive workshops, and networking events. These sessions will provide practical guidance on career development, effective practice techniques, financial sustainability, and maintaining well-being in a high-pressure industry. Our aim is to foster open discussions about the challenges we all encounter in our professional journeys—issues that are too often

Our aim is to foster open discussions about the challenges we all encounter in our professional journeys—issues that are too often overlooked in formal education yet are fundamental to long-term artistic fulfilment.
In addition to these discussions, the festival will feature a concert exploring the theme of mental health among composers and pianists of the past. By shedding light on the struggles faced by some of history’s most revered musicians, we hope to remind participants that they are not alone in their doubts and difficulties. Even the greatest artists have wrestled with self-doubt and personal hardship, and acknowledging this reality can be both inspiring and liberating.
Over the course of three days, we will address a wide range of topics designed to support both professional musicians and students in building a more sustainable and balanced career. Through hands-on workshops, participants will have the opportunity to develop concrete strategies for their own professional paths, while lectures will offer in-depth insights from experienced professionals in the field. Additionally, attendees will have the chance to receive a free advisory and assessment session with coach Laura Ortiz, providing them with personalised guidance on their career development and well-being.
We also hope to initiate much-needed conversations about the hidden complexities of the music profession—especially in an era where social media often presents a one-dimensional portrayal of success.
This festival is an invitation to reflect, learn, and connect. We welcome all those who wish to equip themselves with the tools necessary to navigate the modern musical landscape with confidence, resilience, and a renewed sense of purpose.

BIOS
Sebastian Bausch
I was inspired to play historical instruments by the magnificent organ in my native village in southern Germany. Thanks to wonderful teachers and colleagues, and the opportunity to pursue various interests throughout my career, music remains my greatest passion—even after it became my profession. Thanks to my work at the Cathedral in St Gallen and at HKB, I gained firsthand experience of what it means to be part of large administrative structures. While often challenging, I also came to appreciate the opportunities that arise through good organization, teamwork, and well-planned fundraising. With Atelier Mignon, Laura and I finally realized a lifelong dream: creating a space dedicated to our shared love for 19th-century performance practice and piano rolls.

Philippe Gaspoz
My journey from pianist to arts manager has given me a unique perspective on both performance and the business of music. Having worked in the Sponsoring division of Lucerne Festival and the ZEIT-Stiftung in Hamburg, I now share my expertise with musicians, equipping them with the fundraising skills they need to realize their artistic ambitions.

Laura Granero
As a little girl, I asked myself: Who set such strict rules for interpreting music, and why? And as I began performing in concerts and competitions, why were there gatekeepers deciding which qualities were rewarded while overlooking others? When I discovered early recordings, I found a world in which many of the expressive choices I had been discouraged from making were not only allowed but encouraged. My long-standing admiration for the Schumanns led me to focus my PhD on Fanny Davies, a student of Clara based in suffragist-era London. Feminism became an essential part of my life later on, especially after facing difficult experiences in the industry. It has since fueled my commitment to creating a musical world that is less competitive and free of discrimination, where individuality and diversity are truly valued.
